Reviewed October 2026, this guide breaks down the Valencia to Alicante train route for travelers who want a car-free plan rather than a live booking widget. Direct services run along Spain's Mediterranean Corridor. The rest of this page covers which station to use, when to book, and whether the trip works better as a day out or a longer stay in Alicante.

Valencia to Alicante Train: Quick Answer on Distance, Time and Frequency

Renfe sells direct Valencia–Alicante journeys, with service type and departure station shown in the dated booking result. Its official route page markets Euromed between Valencia Joaquín Sorolla and Alicante/Alacant Terminal. Other results may use Nord or include changes, so compare the station, running time and number of connections together. A live timetable was not captured for every travel date; this guide therefore does not promise a fixed daily departure count or final evening train.

Map of Valencia, Spain

Loading this map connects to Google.

  • Destination: Alicante/Alacant Terminal, the mainline city station.
  • Journey time: compare the scheduled duration for the actual departure, including any change.
  • Frequency: use the dated operator timetable rather than a generic daily count.
  • Outbound: choose a train that leaves useful time in Alicante after the station-to-sight leg.
  • Return: reserve or identify a practical service before committing to the day trip.

Which Train to Take: High-Speed vs Media Distancia

Euromed is a Renfe long-distance product, with a booked departure and seat. Media Distancia or other Renfe services may appear for the chosen date; their tickets and change conditions differ from Cercanías. This route is not a Valencia commuter train covered by an ordinary city pass. Do not assume OUIGO or iryo offers a direct journey between these cities. Use the operator and route actually offered rather than assuming a company serving both cities connects them directly.

Departure and Arrival Stations: Estació del Nord to Alicante-Terminal

Read the departure station on the ticket. Renfe’s official Valencia–Alicante route page uses Joaquín Sorolla for Euromed, so the claim that every service leaves from Nord is wrong. Alicante Terminal and Alacant-Terminal name the same destination station. In Valencia, plan the approach using the station guide and allow enough time for the boarding process of your selected train. See Renfe’s Valencia–Alicante route page.

How Far Ahead to Book and How Fares Move

The intercity train requires its own ticket. The Valencia Tourist Card covers eligible local transport and Cercanías within AB, not Valencia–Alicante long-distance travel. Compare the live fare and its refund/change conditions; a low advertised “from” fare is not a permanent tariff. There is no single advance-sales opening date for every train, so check again if the operator has not released your travel date.

Day Trip or One-Way Leg? How to Decide

A same-day trip works only when the actual outbound and return timetable leaves enough usable hours in Alicante. Add the time to reach the station in Valencia, boarding time, and the final walk or bus in Alicante. Choose one main area, such as the old quarter and waterfront, rather than treating a long list of sights as guaranteed. An overnight stay gives more flexibility. Compare shorter alternatives in the Valencia day-trip hub.

What to Do First in Alicante With Limited Time

Alicante’s Explanada waterfront and old quarter make a manageable focus once you have allowed for the station walk. Santa Bárbara Castle is uphill and needs extra access time; check the current entrance or lift arrangements before adding it. Avoid a tight plan that leaves the return station as an afterthought. The city tourism site provides current visitor information for deciding which attraction fits your time.

Mistakes to Avoid When Booking This Route

A few recurring mix-ups show up across ticket platforms for this route. Avoid these before you commit to a specific departure.

  • Assuming every departure is direct: a minority of listed connections involve a change and can take well over three hours instead of the usual two-plus.
  • Confusing 'Alicante Terminal' aggregator branding with a different Alicante-area stop: it is the same city terminus also seen as Alacant-Terminal.
  • Mixing up the Valencia terminals: verify the printed station for each booked train.
  • Booking on travel day and expecting the lowest advertised fare, since advance prices typically undercut same-day purchases.
  • Ignoring weekend and holiday timetable changes: aggregators note that schedules can shift on those dates, so recheck before you travel.

Shorter Alternatives If Two-Plus Hours Doesn't Fit Your Trip

Not every car-free day trip from Valencia needs a two-hour-plus train ride. If you would rather stay closer to the city, several shorter routes cover different landscapes and travel times. Xàtiva's day trip covers a much shorter inland run than Alicante. Sagunto by train sits even closer, north of the city. For a coastal option instead of Alicante's city break, look at the Gandia route. Cullera's train connection is another short coastal run worth comparing. Nature-focused travelers often choose the Albufera bus route instead of a train entirely, since that stretch is served by bus rather than rail. Inland, Requena's wine-country line makes a different kind of day out. The Buñol train route is another short inland alternative. Heading north instead of south, the Castellón train connection covers a shorter run in the opposite direction from Alicante.

Getting from Alicante-Terminal to the Centre and Beach

Alacant-Terminal is west of the main waterfront sightseeing area. Avenida de la Estación leads toward Luceros; continue toward the centre using a walking route appropriate to your luggage and mobility. Do not confuse Luceros, the urban TRAM terminus, with the mainline railway station.

For onward urban travel, check Alicante’s current bus and TRAM maps. Luceros is a useful TRAM starting point for coastal routes; the mainline station is a separate location. Do not assume Puerta del Mar serves the same direct interurban TRAM routes or that an airport bus is the simplest ticket for a short city hop.

  • For the old quarter: head toward Rambla de Méndez Núñez, then climb into Barrio de Santa Cruz.
  • For Postiguet beach and the marina: continue toward Puerta del Mar.
  • For El Campello, Playa de San Juan or Benidorm, check the appropriate TRAM departure from Luceros and any required change.

Allow extra time if you are catching a return train. The castle, beach and old quarter sit in different directions, so trying to squeeze all three into a short stop can make the day feel rushed.

Use these guides for the next part of your car-free trip:

Plan the first and last city legs with the Valencia transport guide. A day-trip rail ticket does not automatically cover the metro or bus between your accommodation and the departure station.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the train from Valencia to Alicante take?

The running time depends on the selected train and any changes. Compare Renfe’s dated results and add boarding, city-side travel and the Alicante station walk; do not use a single fastest advertised time for every departure.

Is there a direct train from Valencia to Alicante?

Renfe markets direct Euromed journeys between Valencia and Alicante. Check that the particular departure you select is direct and operating on your date.

Which station do trains to Alicante leave from in Valencia?

Use the station on your booked ticket. Renfe’s official Euromed route page uses Valencia Joaquín Sorolla; other train results can have different departure arrangements.

How far in advance should I book?

Book once the operator has released a suitable train and you are comfortable with the fare conditions. Sales windows and promotional availability vary; a cheap headline price is not guaranteed on every date.

Can I do Alicante as a day trip from Valencia by train?

Yes, if the dated return timetable leaves enough time after both station transfers. Choose a limited sightseeing plan and consider an overnight stay if the day would otherwise be dominated by travel.
