Porto Airport to City Centre: Metro, Bus, Taxi and Transfer Compared

Porto Airport to city centre by metro, bus, taxi or transfer: 2026 fares, journey times, and which option fits your trip.

Porto Airport to the city centre normally starts with Metro Line E and a connection or walk to your accommodation. The September review recorded a €2.30 Z4 single plus €0.60 for a new Andante Blue card; confirm the current tariff before buying. The works on 12–13 September 2026 were a dated interruption, not an ongoing closure.

Quick Answer: Metro to Trindade or a Door-to-Door Car

Choose Line E for a low-cost arrival near the central metro network. Allow roughly half an hour aboard to Trindade in normal service, plus the wait for a train, ticket purchase and onward travel. That is not a landing-to-hotel estimate. If your accommodation is down a steep street, you have bulky luggage, or the next service does not suit your arrival, compare a taxi or app ride to the exact address. A family does not automatically need a private transfer, and a solo traveller does not automatically save time by taking a car. The Porto public transport overview helps place the airport leg within the rest of your stay.

12–13 September 2026 Works: Central Metro Replacement Buses

The previously reported central-corridor works applied from 22:00 on 12 September to noon on 13 September 2026. That window has passed. Check Metro do Porto’s latest service information for your date; a historical replacement-bus frequency or validation instruction does not establish the arrangements for a different disruption. Relevant planning information: Metro do Porto's 9 September notice.

Metro Line E: Route, Fares and Frequency

Line E is the violet/purple metro route from Aeroporto through Trindade; some services continue toward Estádio do Dragão. Check the train's destination display rather than assuming every departure reaches Campanhã. Metro do Porto's current timetable page now links schedules effective 7 September 2026. Its September frequency sheet shows service intervals varying through the day, including 15, 20 and 30 minutes. Use the dated timetable for a particular first or last departure: an old 05:57 airport departure in a travel guide is not a reliable daily promise. For Aeroporto–Trindade, load Z4 on your Blue card and validate before boarding. The Porto metro zones guide covers a different final destination, and the Porto metro tickets guide explains purchases and transfers. If your onward journey is to the Douro Valley, plan the airport leg separately from the departure and return choices in our Porto to Pinhão rail guide.

  • 2026 Z4 single: €2.30; reusable Blue card: €0.60 if needed, making the first purchase €2.90.
  • Z4 allows transfer validations within 75 minutes of the first validation, subject to coverage; validate at each line change.
  • Aeroporto and Trindade participate in Andante's limited bank-card contactless pilot: €2.30 at a specially marked validator, without buying a Blue card.
  • A bank-card pilot trip is not proof that every onward boarding station accepts that product.
  • Tour 1 (€7.75/24h) and Tour 3 (€16.55/72h) are separate tourist transport tickets; compare planned rides before buying.

Bus Routes: Cordoaria, Hospital São João and Night Service

STCP's airport connection page lists 601 and 602 for Cordoaria, while 604 goes to Hospital São João. Do not board 604 expecting the same downtown endpoint. These are local routes with intermediate stops, useful when a stop suits your accommodation; they are not all express airport shuttles. Road traffic and the specific stop determine the journey time, so this guide does not give a single guaranteed 50–60-minute duration for all three. Check the correct line, direction and current stop before boarding. An Andante ticket needs appropriate zones. Alternatively, STCP's €2.50 onboard ticket can be bought from the driver with cash, MB WAY or contactless payment and covers that bus journey only. It is not a metro-transfer ticket. Route 3M provides a separate overnight option.

Taxi and Ride-Hail (Uber/Bolt): Cost and Pickup Location

Use the signed official taxi rank or the pickup point assigned by your ride app. Porto Airport's transport guidance describes metered taxis and possible baggage or toll supplements; it does not establish a universal fixed price into the centre. Ask about the fare basis and payment method before departure. For Uber at Porto Airport, enter the actual drop-off address and check the current quote, then follow pickup directions after you are matched. The operator expressly says the assigned point may not be the nearest exit. Do not rely on a generic instruction to turn right and walk two minutes. If using another app such as Bolt, follow that booking's own directions and terms. Demand, vehicle category, traffic and route changes can affect prices; an old €15–22 estimate is not your quote.

Private Transfer: When It's Worth the Extra Cost

A pre-booked transfer can be useful when you want a confirmed meeting procedure or a vehicle selected for your group and luggage. Before paying, check whether the quote is per person or for the whole vehicle, whether it is private or shared, and what happens if the flight is delayed. Meet-and-greet, flight tracking, child seats and waiting time are conditions to confirm, not universal inclusions. A shared shuttle may stop elsewhere before your hotel, while a private vehicle still faces road traffic. Compare the full group price with the current taxi or app option; do not mix a per-person shuttle advertisement and a private-car price in one fare range. Keep the operator's contact and meeting instructions available offline.

Comparison Table: Time, Cost and Best-Fit Traveler by Mode

The public-transport prices below are verified 2026 fares; car prices need a quote for your address. Timings are planning guidance, not a promise that one mode always wins door to door.

From Arrivals Hall to Platform: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

After baggage reclaim and any required arrival formalities, follow the airport signs for your chosen mode. The metro platform is a covered outdoor station connected to the terminal route, not an underground platform directly beneath the arrivals hall. Leave time for the walk and the ticket machines; use lifts where needed and check assistance arrangements if step-free access is essential.

  • Confirm the address and nearest useful stop for your accommodation before buying a ticket.
  • Follow Metro signs to Aeroporto station; do not stop at a coach bay just because it says airport transport.
  • For the normal Trindade journey, buy a Z4 ticket on an individual Blue card, or use a marked contactless-pilot validator if the whole planned route is eligible.
  • Wait for successful validation before boarding and check the Line E destination display.
  • At a metro line change, validate again; during the dated replacement-bus works, follow the special station-validation instructions below.
  • For a taxi, follow official rank signage. For an app ride, follow the assigned pickup directions after matching rather than assuming it uses the taxi queue.

Night Arrivals and Early Departures: What Runs When the Metro Doesn't

STCP lists night route 3M between Avenida dos Aliados and Aeroporto. Its airport overview describes an hourly overnight service in the 00:30–05:30 period, but consult the route timetable for departures in your direction and on your date. Do not copy an airport departure time into your city-to-airport plan. Compare the wait and the final walk with a taxi or app quote. For an early flight, work backwards from your airline's required airport arrival time, adding travel and a margin for disruption. The first metro of the day is only useful if its airport arrival actually leaves enough time. An overnight bus connection is not permission to cut the airport buffer.

Which Station to Use: Historic Centre, Train Station or Gaia

Trindade is a useful interchange for central Porto. For São Bento metro station and the historic centre, change to Line D toward Vila d'Este. Jardim do Morro is the next southbound stop after São Bento, but reaching a particular Gaia cellar still involves walking, often downhill; check the actual address rather than treating the stop as a cellar entrance. For Campanhã, a Line E service showing Estádio do Dragão continues there, while a train terminating at Trindade requires a change to a suitable eastbound service. The official metro map distinguishes the stops. Use the Porto train station guide for onward rail and the Porto bus station guide for Campanhã's coach terminal. Campainha is a different metro stop, not a spelling variant of Campanhã. Your airport metro ticket does not automatically cover a subsequent long-distance train or coach.

Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid making the airport leg harder by buying for the wrong destination or trusting an old price. A Porto Card purchase also needs its own inclusion and collection check; do not assume every card variant covers the airport or that a collection desk is open when you land. Commercial shuttles are separate from STCP buses. The airport lists operators, but verify an actual bookable route with that operator rather than inferring a downtown service from an airport logo.

  • Do not confuse a 30-minute train ride with a 30-minute landing-to-hotel journey.
  • Do not treat every Line E departure as a through train to Campanhã.
  • Do not assume the cheapest Z2 ticket covers Aeroporto–Trindade.
  • Do not treat the €2.50 STCP onboard ticket as an intermodal Andante fare.
  • Do not assume luggage space or a child seat is guaranteed in any standard car category.
  • Do not quote old taxi or app estimates as fixed current prices.
  • Check service notices before a late-night or early-morning connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get from Porto Airport to the city centre?

Normally use Metro Line E toward central Porto, with the onward metro connection or walk appropriate to your accommodation. Check the current route and service information for your arrival date. The works notice for 12–13 September 2026 described a past interruption and is not a current closure warning.

How much does the metro cost from Porto Airport to Trindade?

A Z4 single is €2.30 in 2026. Add €0.60 if buying a Blue card, making €2.90. Eligible bank-card contactless-pilot boarding at Aeroporto costs €2.30 without a separate Blue-card purchase, but onward boarding coverage is limited.

How long does the airport metro take?

Allow roughly half an hour aboard to Trindade in normal service, plus waiting, ticket purchase, transfers and the walk to your address. The dated central works period needs additional time; this is not a guaranteed hotel-arrival estimate.

Is there a night bus from Porto Airport?

Yes, STCP route 3M links Aeroporto and Avenida dos Aliados hourly overnight. Check its current timetable for your date and direction instead of assuming identical departures from both ends.

What is the cheapest way from Porto Airport to Porto?

For the normal Trindade journey, a €2.30 Z4 metro fare is a low-cost option. A new Blue card adds €0.60; eligible contactless boarding avoids that card purchase. An STCP onboard bus-only ticket is €2.50, so compare the actual destination and any transfers rather than only the first fare.

Can you take luggage on the Porto metro?

Plan to keep your bags under control and doorways clear. Bulky cases, a crowded service and a steep final walk may make a door-to-door car more convenient. Do not assume a seat or a particular luggage-storage layout will be available.

Does the airport metro go directly to Campanhã?

Some Line E services continue toward Estádio do Dragão and serve Campanhã; others terminate at Trindade. Check the destination display and change to a suitable eastbound service when necessary. Campainha is a different stop.
