Last updated September 2026. The Porto to Aveiro train is a straightforward car-free day trip: direct urban services leave São Bento and Campanhã, while reserved-seat Intercidades and Alfa Pendular trains use Campanhã. The ordinary adult urban single costs €3.95 in 2026. Start with the service and station that suit your accommodation, then decide whether you want Aveiro's canals alone or the separate bus outing to Costa Nova.

Porto to Aveiro Train: Quick Answer First
For a flexible, low-cost outing, choose a direct CP urban train displaying Aveiro as its destination. Useful daily examples take 1 hour 12 minutes from São Bento or 57 minutes from Campanhã. Those are timings for the named departures below, not a promise that every train takes the same time. Mainline services can cut the Campanhã–Aveiro ride to around 36–40 minutes on the examples checked, but require their own ticket and reserved seat. CP publishes the station-by-station detail in its Aveiro urban timetable, effective 26 July 2026. Check the travel date and service notices before departure. This is one option in our Porto day-trip guide; choose Aveiro for canals and a compact town walk, rather than treating its beach suburbs as part of the train journey.
Urban Train vs Intercidades vs Alfa Pendular: Which Service Fits a Day Trip
The comparison below uses published departures and full adult fares, not promotional booking quotes. In CP’s mainline timetable, daily AP130 leaves Campanhã at 06:40 and reaches Aveiro at 07:16; daily IC720 leaves at 10:45 and arrives at 11:25. The AP example takes 36 minutes and the IC example 40 minutes. That is the ride duration, not the amount saved. Against the 57-minute urban example from the same station, the saving is 21 or 17 minutes respectively. A transfer from central Porto and time waiting for a particular mainline departure can absorb that advantage. Urban trains have no assigned seats, so they suit an open-ended afternoon; choose IC/AP if the departure and reservation suit your plans. Discounted offers may change the fare comparison, but a €3.95 urban ticket is not valid on either reserved-seat service.
| Service | Porto station | Example journey | Full adult single, 2026 | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urban U15715, daily | São Bento / Campanhã | 07:55 / 08:10 → 09:07 | €3.95, plus new card if needed | No assigned seat |
| Intercidades IC720, daily | Campanhã | 10:45 → 11:25 (40 minutes) | €13.55, second class | Specific train and seat |
| Alfa Pendular AP130, daily | Campanhã | 06:40 → 07:16 (36 minutes) | €17.00, Turística | Specific train and seat |

Which Porto Station: São Bento or Campanhã
São Bento is convenient if you are already in central Porto; Campanhã is the mainline station and also a stop on direct urban trains. These are not three service tiers departing from three different stations. For the U15715 example, the train reaches Campanhã at 08:00 but does not depart until 08:10: use the departure row when reading the timetable. Some other urban runs start at Campanhã, and some trains on this corridor terminate before Aveiro. Match the train number, destination and operating-day code rather than boarding any southbound urban service. Our Porto railway-station guide explains the two stations. If you book a qualifying CP regional or mainline ticket to/from Campanhã, CP’s online ticket conditions allow the connecting São Bento–Campanhã urban ride within the hour before the main train departs or after it arrives. This is a CP rail connection, not free Metro travel. Leave a sensible transfer margin; check assistance arrangements with CP if you need help boarding.
Porto to Aveiro Fares, Cards and the Tourist Ticket
The 2026 CP urban price and zone poster places Aveiro nine CP zones from both São Bento and Campanhã. An ordinary adult single is €3.95, so two singles cost €7.90. Add €0.50 if you need a new occasional CP card: €8.40 for that two-single purchase with a new card. Keep the card for reuse. Before buying two singles, compare CP’s Porto urban tourist ticket: its published price is €7.70 for 24 consecutive hours of unlimited travel on the Porto urban lines, including Aveiro. Specify the start date and time at the ticket office; an online voucher must be exchanged there before travel. This is different from Andante Tour and does not cover IC/AP or the Costa Nova bus. Andante’s rail coverage on this southern branch ends at Paramos, not Aveiro; buying Andante Z9 does not turn it into the nine-zone CP fare. The full reserved-seat prices above come from CP’s Intercidades fare table and Alfa Pendular fare table. Eligibility discounts and limited promotional seats are separate offers, so use the actual booking quote for those.
Tickets and Booking: Walk-Up vs Reserved Seat
For ordinary urban travel, buy or load the correct CP route ticket at a station machine or ticket office before boarding. Follow CP’s urban ticket instructions: validate before each journey, no more than ten minutes before the scheduled departure, and keep your receipt. If the journey involves a change of train, CP says validation is needed before the first train. Ask staff about compatibility before loading an existing card; a card’s appearance does not prove that the right ticket is on it. Walk-up travel means no seat reservation, not unlimited rides on a single ticket. Buy IC/AP through CP for a chosen departure and seat, with the identification required by the ticket. If you miss a reserved service, check exchange conditions instead of boarding another train on the assumption that the old ticket remains valid. Allow time for a ticket-office queue, especially if you need to exchange a tourist-ticket voucher.
Useful Departures and the Return to Porto
The following examples are daily urban trains in the currently linked timetable. U15715 leaves São Bento at 07:55 and Campanhã at 08:10, reaching Aveiro at 09:07. U15719 leaves São Bento at 08:55 and Campanhã at 09:10, arriving at 10:07. Extra services have different weekday and weekend restrictions, so “two trains an hour” is not a safe rule for every origin and hour. Select your return before leaving the station and note one later backup. The last daily urban departure shown from Aveiro is 23:26, reaching Campanhã at 00:34 and São Bento at 00:45 the following day. A separate 23:59 Regional is shown on Sunday–Friday and ends its displayed Porto journey at Campanhã; do not assume it runs on Saturday or goes through to São Bento. CP’s temporary notice for train 3401 changes its Monday–Friday schedule from 14 September to 1 November: Aveiro still departs at 23:59, but Campanhã arrival is 00:55 the next day. This notice does not change the urban departures in the table below. The earlier returns below give you more room if a bus or sightseeing stop takes longer than expected.
| Aveiro departure | Campanhã arrival | São Bento arrival | Published operating days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17:23 | 18:20 | 18:35 | Daily |
| 19:23 | 20:20 | 20:30 | Daily |
| 20:26 | 21:34 | 21:45 | Daily |
| 22:26 | 23:34 | 23:45 | Daily |
| 23:26 | 00:34 next day | 00:45 next day | Daily |

Aveiro Station to the Canal District
The train arrives at Aveiro railway station, not at the beach. Exit toward the town and Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho, which leads toward the Canal Central. Allow about 15–20 minutes for this walk as a planning allowance, longer with luggage, stops or mobility needs; it is not a measured accessible-route guarantee. Visit Portugal’s canal walk connects this avenue and the tiled station building with Rua João Mendonça, the Rossio and the waterside streets. Use that compact area as your starting point, then add a canal boat ride only if its operator’s available departure and price suit you. There is no need to commit to a beach transfer to make the day worthwhile. Save your route back to the railway station and allow time to reach the platform, rather than ending your walk at the coach terminal by mistake.
Costa Nova Add-On: BusWay 36, Not a Train Extension
Costa Nova needs a separate transport leg. BusWay line 36 links Aveiro’s Terminal Rodoviário with Largo Arrais Ançã in Costa Nova; many trips also call at R. Clube dos Galitos in central Aveiro. Read the weekday, Saturday or Sunday/public-holiday table and check that your selected column actually reaches Costa Nova. A dash is not a departure. The currently published annual timetable shows 13:00 from the terminal arriving at 13:45 on all three day types. For the return direction, 16:25 from Costa Nova reaches the terminal at 17:10. That leaves only 13 minutes before the 17:23 train, including the move to the railway platform, so choose a later train or an earlier bus rather than treating it as a protected connection. Passage times are indicative and traffic can delay the bus. Confirm the current bus fare and notices with BusWay; neither a CP single nor the CP tourist train ticket includes it. BusWay’s 2026 summer notice restricts faster line 35 to July and August. Do not plan around that seasonal shortcut for a September trip.
A Realistic Aveiro Day Trip
For an Aveiro-only day, the daily 08:55 departure from São Bento and 19:23 return from Aveiro give you a little over nine hours between arrival and departure. The two train rides total 2 hours 19 minutes, with station walks and your journey to São Bento still to add. You can shorten the day with the 17:23 return. Start with the avenue and canals, pause for lunch, then choose more time by the water or one attraction with confirmed opening hours. Adding Costa Nova means fitting two buses and waiting time around that plan; it works better as a deliberate afternoon outing than a last-minute detour. If your priority is a simpler beach visit, compare Espinho by train. For a different city setting, consider Braga, Guimarães or Coimbra. Those are alternatives, not stops to squeeze into the same Aveiro day. Régua and Pinhão serve a different priority: a longer Douro rail outing.
Bus and Rideshare Alternatives to the Train
A coach is a real alternative, not automatically a slower one. FlixBus’s Porto–Aveiro route page advertises a fastest journey of 50 minutes, from Porto TIC–Campanhã to Aveiro’s coach terminal on Rua de Artur de Almeida Eça. The time and fare for your selected date are what matter; an advertised “from” price is not guaranteed for every bus. Compare access to the actual terminals and the flexibility of the return ticket, as well as the fare. A taxi or ride-hailing booking can be considered for a door-to-door trip, but obtain a live quote and confirmed availability rather than relying on a fixed price or assuming an immediate return pickup. For another destination where a coach is the central option rather than a train substitute, see Porto to Amarante by bus.
Frequently Asked Questions

Does Andante cover Porto to Aveiro?
No. Andante rail coverage on this branch ends at Paramos. Aveiro needs the appropriate CP ticket; nine CP zones are not the same as Andante Z9. The CP tourist train ticket is also different from Andante Tour.
Do you need to book Porto to Aveiro train tickets in advance?
Urban trains do not require reserved seats: buy the correct ticket and validate before boarding. Intercidades and Alfa Pendular require a ticket for a specific train and seat. Online CP tourist-ticket vouchers must be exchanged at a ticket office.
