Last updated September 2026, this Porto to Espinho train guide focuses on CP's urban trains along the Aveiro line. They make Espinho a practical car-free beach outing, with a central arrival station and departures from São Bento or Campanhã. Check the actual stopping pattern and ticket type: a mainline booking result is not the timetable or fare for an ordinary urban train.

Porto to Espinho Train: Quick Answer
For a straightforward beach trip, look for a CP Urbano service that stops at Espinho. Direct urban departures exist from both Porto São Bento and Porto Campanhã. Some other itineraries require a connection at Campanhã, so check whether your chosen journey changes trains. Do not assume a fourteen-minute result describes the normal urban service or that every southbound train calls at Espinho.
- Route: CP's Aveiro urban line; choose Espinho as the destination.
- Illustrative daily direct service: U15715 leaves São Bento at 07:55, Campanhã at 08:10 and reaches Espinho at 08:29.
- That example takes 34 minutes from São Bento or 19 minutes from Campanhã; stopping trains can take longer.
- 2026 standard CP urban single: €2.00 for three CP fare zones, plus €0.50 if you need a new occasional CP card.
- Andante can also cover this urban journey when the loaded product covers the required zones and travel time.
Which Porto Station Should You Use?

São Bento is convenient when you are staying in central Porto. Campanhã offers more boarding opportunities because some urban trains on this corridor start there or arrive from another branch. The timetable includes through services from São Bento that stop at Campanhã: two Campanhã times in one column normally show arrival and departure, not automatically a required change. Follow the date-specific journey result for your actual train.
Our Porto railway-station guide explains the two facilities. At Campanhã, distinguish the CP rail platforms from the adjacent metro station and coach terminal. Arrive with time to buy a ticket, validate it and find the correct platform. A screen showing Aveiro or Ovar can be relevant, but confirm Espinho in that train's stopping list before boarding.
Arrive at Espinho, Not Espinho-Vouga

Choose Espinho station for the mainline and urban-train arrival near the seafront. Its rail platforms are underground. Espinho-Vouga is a separate station for the Vouga line, not another platform for the same Porto urban service. Silvalde and Paramos are separate stops farther south on the Aveiro corridor, not interchangeable names for central Espinho. CP's timetable directory lists the Aveiro urban and Vouga services separately.
Check the station again for your return. If a map sends you to Espinho-Vouga, do not assume the Porto urban train departs there. For wheelchair access or boarding assistance, confirm the specific train and both stations with CP's assistance service. A photograph of an escalator or a general description of accessible rolling stock does not establish that every lift and onward route is available on your date.
CP Tickets and Official 2026 Fares
CP does publish prices. Its 2026 Porto urban fare sheet and route-zone matrix place Espinho three CP fare zones from either São Bento or Campanhã. The full adult single is €2.00. The occasional rechargeable CP card costs €0.50 if you need one. These are urban fares, not Alfa Pendular or Intercidades prices.
At the station machine or ticket office, select the actual origin and destination rather than guessing from the number of stops. Buy before boarding and validate the loaded ticket at the station. CP's validation guidance distinguishes owning a ticket from validating it for travel. Keep the card for the return and check that the required journey is loaded.
| Purchase | 2026 price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| CP urban adult single, three zones | €2.00 | One Porto–Espinho urban journey |
| Two full-price singles | €4.00 | Outward and return urban journeys |
| New occasional CP card | €0.50 | Ticket carrier; journeys cost extra |
Can You Use Andante to Espinho?
Yes, a suitable Andante product covers the urban train to Espinho. The Andante network shown on CP's fare sheet continues to Paramos, beyond Espinho. However, a card alone is not a ticket, and a Porto Z2 journey is not automatically sufficient. Select the Andante product for the place where you first validate and the full journey. CP's three fare zones and Andante's Z numbers are different systems; do not transfer the number between them.
The official Andante Blue page publishes 2026 prices and rules: the card is €0.60, with journeys charged separately. It can be reloaded for one year; remaining occasional journeys can then be used for a further twelve months without reloading. One card serves one person at a time. Validate before boarding the train and again when changing line or transport, including when using a pass.
If combining metro or bus travel with the train, compare an integrated ticket with CP-only travel before paying for both. Use the destination list or operator planner to establish the required Andante zones. Andante does not let you board a reserved Alfa Pendular or Intercidades simply because it stops at Espinho. The Porto public-transport overview covers local ticket choices and dated disruption notices.
Timetable, Journey Times and the Return Train
The official Aveiro-line timetable is headed valid from 26 July 2026. Alongside the daily 07:55 São Bento example above, it lists daily U15900 from Campanhã at 07:55 to Espinho at 08:21, taking 26 minutes. Both are direct urban trips from their respective boarding stations. The faster example skips some intermediate stops, so a single blanket journey time is misleading.
For an illustrative evening return, daily U15649 leaves Espinho at 19:19 and reaches Campanhã at 19:39, where that timetable column ends; plan an onward connection if you need São Bento. These are published examples, not a complete first-and-last service list or a guarantee against disruption. Read the PDF's daily, weekday and weekend/holiday notes and check CP's date-specific search before relying on a train.
Pick an intended return and a later backup before leaving Porto. Do not use a reseller's count of bookable mainline trains as the urban frequency. If your return terminates at Campanhã, allow for an onward connection instead of assuming it reaches São Bento.
Beach, Market or Coastal Walk: Choose Your Day
Espinho works well for a flexible half-day at the coast or a fuller day with lunch and a walk. Portugal's national tourism board describes Praia da Baía beside the centre, with a seaside walkway, surfing and bodyboarding activity and beach facilities. Enjoy the sea view without assuming you must swim. Follow current beach flags and lifeguard instructions; sunshine and breakwaters do not guarantee safe water conditions.
The Feira Semanal is normally a Monday outing. Its municipal regulation identifies Monday and Avenida 24; a July 2026 report filmed at the market also describes its Monday tradition. Check municipal notices for date-specific or holiday changes. This weekly fair is not every market held in Espinho, and exact current opening hours were not independently confirmed here.
For a longer coastal walk, Granja is a possible separate rail endpoint north of Espinho; CP's route map shows it as the next station. Check the pedestrian route and current conditions rather than relying on an unverified three-kilometre boardwalk claim. Buy or load a ticket from the station where you actually return. In heavy rain or strong wind, our recommendation is to change a beach-focused plan or check an indoor venue's programme first, not assume the town has no indoor attractions.
Espinho Versus Other Porto Day Trips
Choose Espinho for a short coastal outing, not as a substitute for every kind of sightseeing. The Aveiro rail guide follows the same corridor farther south for canals and city architecture. Braga's day-trip route and the Guimarães old-town visit suit a historic-city day. Coimbra's train and university guide needs a different mainline ticket and onward station connection.
For other landscapes, compare Viana do Castelo's river-and-coast outing, the Pinhão journey through the Douro or the shorter Douro option at Régua. Amarante's bus-based outing is a road alternative, not a direct train trip. The Porto day-trip comparison brings the choices together. Judge each destination on the complete travel day, your interests and the forecast.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Porto to Espinho urban train in 2026?
The standard adult CP urban single is €2.00 for three CP fare zones from São Bento or Campanhã. Two full-price singles cost €4.00; add €0.50 if you need a new occasional CP card. Andante and mainline products have different prices.
How long does the urban train take?
The July 2026 timetable includes a daily direct example taking 34 minutes from São Bento or 19 minutes from Campanhã. Another daily direct departure takes 26 minutes from Campanhã. Check the actual train rather than treating fourteen minutes as typical.
Can I take a direct train from São Bento?
Yes. CP's timetable includes direct São Bento–Espinho urban trains. Other itineraries start at or require a change at Campanhã, so check your service and its operating-day note.
Is Espinho-Vouga the same station as Espinho?
No. Espinho-Vouga serves the separate Vouga line. For the normal urban train from Porto, choose Espinho station, with underground platforms near the centre and seafront.
Does Andante cover the train to Espinho?
A suitable Andante product covers the urban route to Espinho within the network's Paramos limit. Load the zones required for the complete journey and validate before boarding. CP fare-zone numbers are not interchangeable with Andante Z numbers.
What day is Espinho's weekly market?
The Feira Semanal is normally held on Monday around Avenida 24. Check municipal notices for holiday or date-specific changes. It is not the same event as every other market held in Espinho.
Is Espinho worth a day trip from Porto?
Yes for a beach walk, coastal lunch or a planned market visit. A half-day can suit a simple seafront outing. If the forecast is poor, change the beach-focused plan or check a specific indoor programme before travelling.
