Last updated September 2026. The Porto to Viana do Castelo train makes a practical car-free day trip for an old-town walk, a museum ship and, when conditions suit, Santa Luzia above the city. Two useful morning choices leave Campanhã: Celta at 08:10, arriving 09:26, or InterRegional at 08:50, arriving 10:21. Choose the ticket type and return together: these services use different fares and reservation rules.

Porto to Viana do Castelo Train: Quick Answer

For a straightforward first visit, choose the 08:50 InterRegional out and 18:55 InterRegional back. That gives 8h34 in Viana and returns you to Campanhã at 20:14. Celta offers an earlier arrival and a reserved seat, but needs its own ticket. The CP Minho timetable, effective 14 December 2025, distinguishes both categories; check it alongside current service notices for your travel date.

  • Main morning departure station: Porto Campanhã; do not assume the 08:10 or 08:50 trains start at São Bento.
  • Full adult InterRegional single from Campanhã: €8.90. Two ordinary singles cost €17.80 before any qualifying discount.
  • Celta full adult Campanhã–Viana fare: €9.45 single or €15.10 return under the published return offer; reservation required.
  • Last direct return shown: IR856 at 21:08, arriving Campanhã 22:30. Plan an earlier return when you have an onward commitment.
  • Andante does not cover the journey to Viana. Food, sightseeing and the Santa Luzia funicular are separate costs.

Direct Trains and Useful Departure Times

The morning Celta journey takes 1h16; the 08:50 IR takes 1h31. Neither requires a change en route. The evening Celta is faster at 1h07, but its arrival is too late for a conventional day-trip start. Comparing only the fastest advertised duration can therefore point you toward the wrong train. The examples below are daily in the checked timetable, not a claim that every service runs every day.

Celta42319:1020:171h07; reservation
  • The first listed direct option, 06:00, suits an early start, but sightseeing venues may not be open when you arrive.
  • The 13:05 São Bento / 13:10 Campanhã IR853 is a genuine through service. Do not confuse it with an urban train that connects at Nine.
  • The late Regional departure at 22:10 travels from Campanhã to Viana, arriving 23:37. It is not a 22:10 return to Porto.
  • The separate 20:53 Intercidades runs Sunday–Friday, not Saturday; it is not a useful morning day-trip option.

Which Porto Station Should You Use?

Start your morning plan at Campanhã railway station. If staying near São Bento, check a connecting CP urban train and leave time to find the onward platform. A 20–30-minute interchange allowance is our planning preference, not an operator guarantee or a measured minimum. A Metro ride to Campanhã and a CP urban connection are different products; use the Porto public transport guide for the local leg.

  • For eligible Regional/InterRegional journeys bought under CP's online/app conditions, the Campanhã ticket can include a CP urban connection to or from São Bento within the stated one-hour window. Check the purchased itinerary rather than paying twice automatically.
  • That qualifying connection is not a Metro benefit. This review has not established the same inclusion for Celta, so confirm it separately.
  • For a later start, IR853 leaves São Bento itself at 13:05. Morning Celta421 and IR831 require reaching Campanhã first.
  • On the way home, some trains continue to São Bento and others do not. The 18:55 and 21:08 Viana departures reach Campanhã without a through São Bento time.

2026 Fares: InterRegional, Regional and Celta

The CP Regional/InterRegional tariff valid from 1 January 2026 lists the adult single fares below. They are ordinary tariff amounts, not reseller estimates or date-specific checkout quotes. A cheaper Regional fare does not prove that a convenient direct Regional train exists at your preferred time.

Origin to VianaInterRegional singleRegional single
Porto Campanhã€8.90€8.10
Porto São Bento€9.20€8.35
  • Two full Campanhã IR singles total €17.80. CP has a conditional Regional/IR return discount; ask the sales channel to calculate eligibility for the selected journey rather than applying a percentage to every combination.
  • The separate 2026 Celta tariff explicitly includes Campanhã–Viana: €9.45 full adult single and €15.10 full adult return, with its 20% return offer.
  • Celta's listed youth (13–25) and senior (60+) single is €7.10; its child (4–12) single is €5.65. Those concession returns are twice the listed single, without another 20% reduction.
  • A mixed Celta-out/IR-back day uses different products. Do not assume the Celta return price covers a different category on the way home.
  • Your Andante ticket may cover the appropriate local Porto zones, but it is not the ticket to Viana.

Buying the Right Ticket and Reserving a Seat

For Regional/InterRegional services, use CP's available website, app or station sales channels and read the conditions attached to the chosen itinerary. Ordinary R/IR trains are unreserved: buying early does not reserve a seat, and an unreserved train does not have unlimited capacity. Do not treat the published tariff as an airline-style promise that its price rises every day. Nor should you assume a ticket tied to a selected service allows any train.

  • Celta is a real option, not a Renfe labeling mistake. CP's international-sales guidance directs customers to CP international ticket offices or Renfe's website.
  • The current CP guidance for Renfe online sales says tickets must be printed, one A4 ticket per passenger. It also describes named tickets and a 15-minute purchase cutoff. Follow the issued ticket's instructions; do not rely only on a phone screenshot.
  • Celta has mandatory seat reservations in the timetable. Secure both legs before making a fixed sightseeing booking, especially if choosing its return offer.
  • A date-specific booking was not made for this review. The fare table proves a Viana tariff exists, not that seats are available on your date.
  • Buy before boarding where sales are available; CP's onboard-sales exception is not a general invitation to skip the ticket office.

Return Trains and the Last Direct Service

The return direction matters more than a search result labeled simply 'last train'. The daily direct options below depart Viana do Castelo toward Porto. The useful early-evening pair is Celta at 18:18 or IR at 18:55. IR856 at 21:08 is the final direct return shown in the checked timetable; it is a later option, not a sensible default before a flight or another non-refundable connection.

IR83018:55Campanhã 20:14

  • On weekdays excluding public holidays, Regional3304 at 16:24 connects at Nine (17:26 arrival / 17:31 urban departure), reaching Campanhã 18:10 / São Bento 18:15. The Regional is daily, but this 17:31 urban connection is not.
  • Regional3106 at 17:45 reaches Nine at 18:40; urban15244 leaves 18:50 for Campanhã 19:45 / São Bento 19:50.
  • These connecting options may suit an earlier finish, but the short Nine transfers rely on normal running. Check the next option before committing to a tight connection.
  • Read day codes individually: the 13:49 Regional3302 return is weekday-only, excluding public holidays. The adjacent weekend column ends at Viana; it does not create a weekend 13:49 departure.
  • Aim to be at Viana station 20–30 minutes before your chosen return. This is a personal buffer, not protection against a canceled or disrupted train.

From Viana Station to the Old Town and River

Viana's railway station is close to the historic centre, so start there rather than treating the station as an out-of-town arrival. A simple sequence is Praça da República, the old-town lanes, then the Gil Eannes waterfront. The national tourism route places the Misericórdia and cathedral around this central area; São Domingos is a separate church on Rua General Barbosa, not another name for the Misericórdia.

  • Use the old town as the flexible part of the day: pause for lunch or a café without stacking timed tickets.
  • The church photograph shows the interior of São Domingos. Check opening at the door if you want to enter; no current church admission price is asserted here.
  • Return toward the railway station for Santa Luzia access. The station-to-centre avenue should not be mistaken for the riverside promenade.
  • Keep a separate beach excursion out of this city/ship/hill plan. Extra stops still need their own access and return-time calculation.

Gil Eannes: A Concrete Museum Stop

The Gil Eannes Foundation lists individual admission at €5.50. The ship museum opens 09:30–19:00 April–October and 09:30–18:00 November–March, closing on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Its original 1955 structure limits visits for people with mobility difficulties; do not assume that a waterfront location makes the interiors accessible.

  • Allow about 60–90 minutes as an editorial planning block, adjusting to your interests and mobility; this is not an official visit duration.
  • A museum-first plan is useful when hill visibility is poor or the funicular is unavailable. It still leaves time for lunch and the old town.
  • Keep the ship's published closing time separate from the funicular's. One venue being open does not establish that you can still travel up and down Santa Luzia.

Santa Luzia Without a Car

For the hill, Visit Portugal describes reaching the funicular's N202 entrance via the local lift at the railway station. This is separate from boarding a CP train. Check the municipal funicular information before relying on it: the current fare and operating hours could not be verified during this review because the detailed municipal page repeatedly failed to load. Old €2/€3 figures are not a current quote.

  • Confirm operation, the last descent and the fare locally before buying or heading uphill. Build the train return around the descent, not just the ascent.
  • Allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours for access, waiting, the hilltop and return as a flexible planning block; it is not a promised funicular frequency or a measured journey time.
  • If the hill is clouded in or the service is unavailable, keep the day in town. Do not turn a missed lift into an unplanned strenuous climb.
  • The photograph below is a Santa Luzia rose-window detail, not a panorama or evidence of current interior opening. Sanctuary, dome and other paid access may have separate conditions.

An 8-Hour Day Plan, Plus an Earlier Finish

The 08:50 IR arrives at 10:21 and the 18:55 IR leaves 8h34 later. Treat the schedule below as a suggested allocation, not an escorted itinerary or a series of guaranteed opening times. It deliberately leaves spare time: a queue, a slower meal or a changed hill plan should not force a sprint for the train.

Planning blockSuggested use
10:21–12:00Arrival, old-town orientation and coffee
12:00–13:30Lunch and a walk toward the river
13:30–15:00Gil Eannes if its admission and access suit you
15:00–17:00Optional Santa Luzia block only after checking operation
17:00–18:25Flexible town time, then return to the station
18:55–20:14Direct IR to Campanhã
  • For an earlier finish, the same arrival followed by the 15:05 IR gives 4h44 in Viana. Choose the old town plus either the ship or the hill, not a checklist of everything.
  • For a reserved Celta day, 08:10 out / 18:18 back gives 8h52 in Viana and reaches Campanhã at 19:35. Shift the station-return target earlier than in the IR plan.
  • Two ordinary IR singles plus individual ship entry total €23.30 before eligible rail discounts, food, funicular and local Porto connections. The published adult Celta return plus the same museum entry totals €20.60 under that return offer.
  • Do not book a close flight connection on the basis of the rail arrival alone. Airport travel and flight check-in require additional time beyond this city-break plan.

Access, Weather and Choosing Another Porto Day Trip

Check CP's specific-needs assistance for your actual trains and platforms. Visit Portugal notes a right-side station entrance alternative, granite surfaces around town, unguarded riverfront stretches and a small level change when boarding the funicular. Those details help frame questions; they do not certify an end-to-end step-free trip. The museum ship has its own access limitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Porto to Viana do Castelo?

Yes. Useful daily direct morning trains leave Campanhã at 08:10 (Celta) and 08:50 (InterRegional). IR853 also starts at São Bento at 13:05, calling at Campanhã at 13:10.

How long does the Porto to Viana do Castelo train take?

The morning Celta takes 1h16 from Campanhã; the 08:50 InterRegional takes 1h31. A faster 1h07 Celta runs in the evening, so it is not the duration to use for the morning IR day plan.

How much does the train to Viana do Castelo cost?

The 2026 full adult Campanhã single is €8.90 on InterRegional or €8.10 on Regional. Celta has a separate €9.45 single / €15.10 adult return tariff and mandatory reservations. Discounts, mixed-category journeys and São Bento origins need their own calculation.

Does Andante cover Viana do Castelo?

No. Buy a separate ticket for the Viana journey. An Andante product may cover the appropriate local Porto connections, but it does not replace the Regional, InterRegional or Celta ticket.

Can I visit Viana do Castelo as a day trip?

Yes. The 08:50 Campanhã departure arrives at 10:21, and the 18:55 return gives 8h34 in town before reaching Campanhã at 20:14. The old town, ship museum and an optional Santa Luzia visit can fit if opening, access and weather suit you.

What time is the last direct train from Viana back to Porto?

The checked CP timetable shows IR856 at 21:08, arriving Campanhã at 22:30. The often-confused 22:10 service runs in the opposite direction. Recheck your date and disruptions, and favor an earlier return before an onward commitment.

Can I reach Santa Luzia without a car?

The funicular provides a car-free hill option, with access near Viana's railway station. Confirm the current fare, operation and last descent before going up; those details could not be freshly verified here. Keep a town-based alternative if it is closed or visibility is poor.
