Last updated September 2026, this guide explains Porto metro tickets: which Andante product to buy, how to load journeys, and when to validate. A reusable Blue card costs €0.60; a Z2 journey costs €1.40 and Z4 costs €2.30 under the 2026 tariff. These are zone-based tickets, not money deducted from a general-purpose cash balance. Your route, transfers and travel frequency determine the right purchase.

Quick Answer: The Porto Metro Tickets You Need and Where to Buy Them

For a first visit, buy one Andante Blue card per traveller and load the required zone ticket at a metro ticket machine. Keep the card for later purchases. Choose your destination before paying: the minimum Z2 fare does not cover every journey across the metropolitan area. The Porto metro zones guide explains the rings; the Porto public transport guide helps choose the actual route. A transfer can remain on the same ticket when its zone coverage and time validity allow it, but you still validate again. Buying a card and loading a ticket does not itself validate your first ride.

  • Check the destination's required zone tier at your departure station.
  • Buy a €0.60 Andante Blue card if you do not already have a usable one; each passenger needs their own.
  • Load journeys of the appropriate tier, or choose an appropriate 24-hour product.
  • Validate before boarding the metro and again at every line or transport change.
  • Keep the card: the next purchase normally needs only the fare, not another card.

12–13 September 2026 Works: Central Metro Replacement Buses

Metro do Porto's 9 September notice announces a closure between Campo 24 de Agosto and Senhora da Hora from 22:00 on Saturday 12 September until 12:00 on Sunday 13 September. Both boundary stations remain available for travel in the other directions. STCP replacement buses are scheduled every ten minutes along the affected section. During this specific replacement operation, validate Andante inside metro stations, not aboard the replacement bus. An airport-to-centre journey crossing the closed section therefore cannot be treated as the normal uninterrupted train ride. Allow extra time and check the operator's latest instructions; the ordinary route descriptions elsewhere in this guide apply outside this works period.

What Andante Is and Why It Covers Metro, Bus, and Train

Andante integrates Metro do Porto, STCP and other participating services, including only the covered sections of CP's rail network. Do not interpret an interchange on a railway map as proof that every train beyond it accepts your ticket. CP's description of the Andante network identifies its urban-rail reaches as Porto–Paramos, Porto–Lousado, Porto–Vila das Aves, Porto–Paredes and Porto–Leça do Balio. Those are not the full lines to Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães or Marco de Canaveses. For a trip beyond ordinary Andante coverage, check CP's ticket for the complete journey. Monthly combined passes have separate rules and are not an automatic extension of an occasional Blue-card ticket. This distinction matters when using Porto's train stations for a day trip rather than a local connection.

Ticket and Card Options: Which Porto Metro Ticket Matches Your Trip

The official January 2026 tariff lists the following fares. The Blue card's €0.60 purchase cost is separate. Andante 24 is zone-based; Tour 1 and Tour 3 are distinct tourist products with their own cards. Do not buy a more expensive pass just because you are staying several nights: compare the journeys you expect to take. Four separate Z2 tickets cost €5.60, versus €5.35 for a Z2 Andante 24, but a day ticket must still cover your entire itinerary. A day largely spent walking may need only one or two singles. The Porto Card guide compares sightseeing benefits and transport products.

Zone tierSingle journeyAndante 24
Z2€1.40€5.35
Z3€1.85€6.85
Z4€2.30€8.55
Z5€2.80€10.25
Z6€3.25€12.20
  • Buy ten identical occasional single journeys together and receive one extra journey free; avoid buying a batch you will not use.
  • The 2026 STCP tariff lists Tour 1 at €7.75 for 24 hours and Tour 3 at €16.55 for 72 hours across the Andante network, excluding heritage trams and the funicular.
  • A monthly pass is a separate purchase, not a reason to replace a short-stay Blue card with plastic.
  • Treat these as verified September 2026 prices, not a promise that fares will remain unchanged for a later visit.

Where to Buy and Recharge an Andante Card

Use metro ticket machines or an authorized Andante sales point; do not assume every station has an open staffed counter. Select a new card or recharge, the correct ticket tier and the number of journeys, then follow the machine's instructions through completion. Check the loaded product, not just the amount charged. Buying the wrong zone tier cannot be fixed by validating harder. If arriving on the Porto airport to city centre route, allow time for ticket purchase before heading to the platform. The official Blue-card page gives the card a one-year loading validity: after it expires you cannot add tickets, but tickets already loaded remain usable for the following 12 months. An older card is therefore worth checking before discarding, although it cannot be assumed to accept a new load.

Can You Use a Bank Card or Phone Instead?

Yes, but coverage differs. The official contactless pilot accepts boarding at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música, Trindade, Campanhã, Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento and Aliados, plus STCP bus 500. Only specially marked validators accept the bank-card product. It charges €2.30 for a 75-minute journey, with a €7.75 daily cap when four or more chargeable journeys are made. This is not network-wide acceptance: check the boarding points for your return and any transfers too. For short Z2 travel, ordinary Andante tickets can cost less. The Anda travel app is another system, with official travel requirements including Android, NFC and Bluetooth. An app that loads a physical card is not automatically a phone-as-ticket service; check current device support and setup before relying on it. Separately, STCP sells a €2.50 onboard bus ticket from the driver with cash, MB WAY or contactless payment. That ticket covers only the bus journey on which it is bought; it is not the pilot’s Z4-equivalent intermodal fare.

How to Validate a Porto Metro Ticket, Step by Step

Validate at the start of your trip and each time you change line or mode. Andante permits validation no more than ten minutes before travel starts. On metro and rail, use station validators before boarding; on buses, use the reader at the entrance. Loading a card, having a receipt, or seeing other people walk straight onto a platform is not a substitute for this step. Remove the card from your wallet so the reader does not select another contactless card.

  • Bring the Andante card close to the validator's reading target and wait for its response.
  • A green light and confirmation sound mean acceptance; check the displayed remaining tickets or ticket information.
  • Repeat at each line or mode change, even during the same ticket's valid transfer period.
  • On a red light, read the message before moving away; do not treat an unsuccessful tap as permission to board.

What to Do if Validation Fails: The Red Light Explained

A red light means validation was rejected. Keep the card near the reader long enough to read the reason, then address that problem: you may need a usable ticket or help with the card, rather than another identical tap. Check the loaded zone tier and whether a ticket remains for a new journey. If the problem persists, ask staff or contact Andante at +351 226 158 151; its site describes the call as charged to the national fixed network. Do not board on the assumption that a purchase receipt will replace a successful validation. Blue-card journeys do not consume a euro balance as distance accumulates. A ticket is activated and has defined validity; the useful checks are its coverage, time and the tickets left for later travel.

Using One Andante Ticket Across Metro, Bus, and Train

For an eligible mixed-mode trip, validate before the first metro or CP boarding and again at each transfer. Z2 and Z3 single tickets allow validations within one hour of the first; Z4 allows one hour fifteen minutes. The Andante validity rules explain this timed model. A later validation outside that window starts a new ticket where one is available. Keep all legs within the purchased zone coverage, and do not assume a long sightseeing stop preserves the original transfer. At Porto's bus terminal, distinguish a local participating service from a separately ticketed long-distance coach. Heritage services also need their own check: use the Porto tram guide and Porto funicular guide before assuming a normal occasional metro ticket covers them.

Mistakes to Avoid With Porto Metro Tickets

The most useful pre-ride check is simple: right ticket, right zones, successful validation. For a central sightseeing day, the Porto self-guided walking tour can help you avoid buying tickets for distances you would prefer to walk. Save transport for journeys that suit your route and mobility needs, rather than trying to use up an unnecessary bundle.

  • Do not share one card between passengers travelling together.
  • Do not call the remaining number of tickets a cash balance, or expect it to decrease gradually during a ride.
  • Do not skip a transfer validation because the first tap succeeded.
  • Do not assume every CP route, tourist tram or long-distance bus accepts an occasional Andante ticket.
  • Do not confuse buying tickets with activating them for travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you buy a metro ticket in Porto?

At a metro ticket machine, buy or recharge an Andante Blue card, choose the zone tier for your route and load the journeys you need. A new card costs €0.60, plus the fare: Z2 is €1.40 and Z4 is €2.30 in 2026. Validate before boarding.

Do you need an Andante card for the metro?

It is a practical option for most visitors, but not the only one. A limited bank-card contactless pilot accepts boarding at nine named metro stations and on STCP bus 500, using specially marked validators. Check the full route and return boarding point before relying on it.

How do you validate an Andante card correctly?

Hold it close to the validator and wait for the green light and confirmation sound. Validate before the first metro or train boarding and at every line or mode change. On a bus, use the validator at the entrance.

What happens if your Andante card shows a red light?

The tap was rejected. Keep the card near the reader to read the reason and resolve it before boarding. Check the ticket loaded and ask staff or Andante support if the problem persists.

Can you use the same ticket for metro, bus and train in Porto?

Yes, for participating services and covered CP sections, provided the route and transfer validations fit the ticket's zone and time rules. It does not cover all trains to cities such as Braga or Aveiro.

How long is an Andante Blue card valid for?

It can be loaded for one year. After that, it cannot be recharged, but already-loaded tickets can still be used for the following 12 months. This card lifespan is different from each activated journey's validity.

Is Porto Card better value than regular Andante tickets?

It depends on the attractions and transport you will actually use. Compare your planned purchases with the current inclusions in the Porto Card guide, rather than assuming a sightseeing pass is automatically cheaper.
