Last updated September 2026. The Porto to Guimarães train is a direct CP urban service from São Bento through Campanhã. A standard adult single costs €3.60, and useful daily morning departures take about 1 hour 15–19 minutes from São Bento. You can make a car-free day of the historic centre and castle area, but save your return times before setting off: there are substantial gaps in the published timetable, including on weekdays. Here are the actual fare rules, station choices and alternatives, rather than conflicting estimates from ticket resellers.

Porto to Guimarães Train: Timetable and Journey Time
Use the official CP Guimarães urban timetable, currently linked with an effective date of 14 December 2025. The following direct departures are marked daily. Times are local and are examples from the published schedule; reconfirm the service for your date and check disruption notices. The 09:20 departure from São Bento is a faster weekday service, not an extra daily option between the 08:20 and 10:20 trains. Distance estimates are not a useful substitute for reading your train's arrival time.
| Train | São Bento departure | Campanhã departure | Guimarães arrival | Time from São Bento |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U15153 — daily | 07:20 | 07:25 | 08:35 | 1h15 |
| U15155 — daily | 08:20 | 08:25 | 09:39 | 1h19 |
| U15159 — daily | 10:20 | 10:25 | 11:35 | 1h15 |
| U15163 — daily | 12:20 | 12:25 | 13:39 | 1h19 |

Which Porto Station: São Bento or Campanhã?
Both stations serve the direct urban trains in the table. São Bento is the convenient starting point for many visitors staying in the historic centre; Campanhã is useful if you are already near the eastern transport interchange. These are two boarding points for the same train, not a mandatory transfer. Once aboard a direct Guimarães urban service at São Bento, remain on it at Campanhã. Check that the destination display says Guimarães, because Braga and other northbound trains share part of the corridor before branching off. Platforms can change, so use the departure board rather than a fixed platform number copied from a guide. Our Porto train station guide explains the two stations and the difference between railway and Metro facilities. Allow time to buy and validate your ticket before going to the platform.
2026 Fares, CP Cards and the Andante Boundary
The 2026 CP urban fare sheet puts Guimarães in eight CP fare zones from either São Bento or Campanhã: €3.60 for a standard adult single. Two ordinary singles cost €7.20. A new occasional CP card adds €0.50, making €7.70 for that carrier plus the two journeys. Keep the reusable CP card and ask staff which tickets it can currently hold before loading another trip. Buy the appropriate destination ticket at a CP sales point or machine and validate before boarding; ordinary urban tickets do not assign a seat. Eligibility-based discounts have their own conditions, so the figures here are full adult fares, not a promise for every passenger. Andante does not cover the whole trip. On the Guimarães branch its boundary is Vila das Aves, before Guimarães. Eight CP zones are not the same thing as an Andante Z8 ticket, and a Porto metropolitan pass alone does not extend to Guimarães.
| Item | Standard 2026 amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| One CP Urban journey | €3.60 | São Bento or Campanhã to Guimarães |
| Two ordinary singles | €7.20 | Outward and return rail journeys |
| New occasional CP carrier | €0.50 | Reusable card, charged separately if needed |
| Andante city/Metro ticket | Separate product | Does not cover the entire Guimarães journey |
Return Trains: Real Gaps and the Last Departure
Plan the return from the Guimarães-to-Porto half of CP's timetable, using its day-of-operation footnotes. Daily departures include 13:51 and 15:51, already a two-hour gap. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the next urban train after 15:51 is 17:56: a gap of 2 hours 5 minutes. On weekdays a 17:06 service runs instead, with additional evening departures. The table below highlights useful weekend/public-holiday returns, not every train on every day. The final listed urban departure is 22:55 daily, reaching Campanhã at 00:10 and São Bento at 00:15 the following day. Recheck this before relying on it, especially if connecting to Metro, an onward train or an airport service.
| Guimarães departure | Campanhã arrival | São Bento arrival | Operation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15:51 | 17:01 | 17:05 | Daily |
| 17:56 | 19:06 | 19:10 | Saturday, Sunday and public holidays |
| 19:51 | 21:01 | 21:05 | Saturday, Sunday and public holidays |
| 21:51 | 23:01 | 23:05 | Daily |
| 22:55 | 00:10 next day | 00:15 next day | Daily |
Is the Intercidades Train Worth Booking?
Most day-trippers will find the urban train simpler, but it is not the only CP product serving Guimarães. The currently linked mainline timetable lists daily IC621 from Campanhã at 14:45 to Guimarães at 15:42, a 57-minute journey. That afternoon arrival is less useful for a full day of sightseeing than an earlier urban train. CP's 2026 Intercidades tariff lists a standard second-class single of €13.55 for Porto Campanhã–Guimarães, with possible eligible discounts or offers. IC is a reserved-seat service for a specific departure; the €3.60 urban fare does not apply. Compare the whole schedule and ticket conditions before paying extra simply because a search result labels one train faster.

Guimarães Station to the Historic Centre
The railway station is south of the historic centre, beside Avenida Dom João IV. The municipality's tourist city map shows Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques leading north towards Largo do Toural. Use that as an orientation point, then continue into the old streets and squares. Allow roughly 15–20 minutes to get oriented and walk towards the central area; this is a planning allowance, not a timed or step-free route guarantee. The castle and Paço dos Duques are farther on, beyond the central squares, so do not treat arrival at the station as arrival at every attraction. Save the station pin for the return and allow for slopes, crossings, cobbles and your own walking pace. If a walking connection is unsuitable, consult the municipality's public-transport directory for Guimabus services or arrange a taxi. Confirm any boarding-assistance needs directly with CP.
A Manageable Car-Free Day in Guimarães
An early urban arrival gives you room for a focused walking day without a second intercity transfer. Visit the central squares around Largo da Oliveira and Praça de São Tiago, follow Rua de Santa Maria towards the castle and Paço dos Duques area, then leave time for lunch or another indoor visit before returning to the station. The official Guimarães sightseeing route provides the relationship between these places; check each monument's current opening and admission conditions if entering is essential to your plan. This is an itinerary suggestion, not a claim that every museum is open every day. For a shorter outing, prioritise the centre and one major sight. Avoid scheduling a final visit so tightly that a missed train turns into a long station wait.
- Choose a target return and a backup before leaving Porto.
- Work backwards from departure to allow the walk, ticket validation and platform access.
- Treat the Penha mountain outing as extra time and a separate transport plan, not part of the compact old-town walk.
- If adding Braga, compare the extra transfer and sightseeing time with an unhurried day here.
Direct Coaches and the Porto Airport Connection
A direct coach is a real alternative; you do not need to switch to an unrelated day-trip destination just to travel by bus. FlixBus's Porto–Guimarães route page lists Porto TIC Campanhã and Guimarães Central de Camionagem, beside Guimarães Shopping on Alameda Dr. Mariano Felgueiras. That coach terminal is not Guimarães railway station. The operator advertises a fastest ride of 44 minutes, but duration, seat availability and price depend on the selected departure. Compare the actual booking quote and terminal access with the fixed urban fare; do not assume a promotional headline is available for your day. A taxi or ride-hailing car can reduce transfers, but use a live quote rather than treating an unverified €30 figure as a dependable budget.
- From Porto Airport, GET BUS lists a direct 40-minute scheduled coach between airport P8 and Guimarães coach terminal, Cais 8. Check current departure and fare; traffic may extend the ride.
- GET BUS recommends being at the bus at least 15 minutes early. Do not book a close connection from a landing time without allowing for airport formalities.
- There is no direct CP train from the airport terminal. For Metro into Porto followed by an urban train, use our Porto Airport transfer guide and allow for the station connection.
Guimarães and Braga: A Possible Two-City Day
You can connect the two cities without returning through Porto. The rail branches meet at Lousado; use CP's journey planner to find a workable connection for your date. There is also a direct coach: the 2026 line 101 timetable links the coach terminals via the A11. It has school and reduced-season schedules and no service on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays or Carnival. For example, its Guimarães-to-Braga 15:00–15:50 journey appears in both seasonal tables. Include the trip from the historic centre to the coach terminal and a separate rail return from Braga if that is your plan. This works best when you deliberately limit sightseeing in each city. If Bom Jesus is also a priority, consider a separate Braga day trip.
Other Day Trips from Porto to Compare
For different scenery, consider Aveiro's canals or a coastal trip to Espinho. The Douro journeys to Pinhão and Régua follow a different corridor from the inland Guimarães line. Viana do Castelo and Coimbra need their own train and station-access planning. Amarante is reached by bus, not a current CP passenger rail service. The Porto day-trip comparison helps you choose among these selected outings; it is not a list of every possible rail destination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a direct train from Porto to Guimarães?
Yes. Direct CP urban trains leave São Bento and call at Campanhã on the way to Guimarães. Stay on the same train at Campanhã if you boarded the correct through service. The destination display matters because other northbound trains follow different branches.
How long does the Porto to Guimarães train take?
The daily 07:20 and 10:20 urban departures from São Bento take 1 hour 15 minutes; the daily 08:20 departure takes 1 hour 19 minutes. Boarding at Campanhã shortens these examples by five minutes. Other stopping patterns differ, so check the selected departure.
How much is a Porto to Guimarães train ticket in 2026?
A standard adult CP Urban single is €3.60 from São Bento or Campanhã. Two singles total €7.20; add €0.50 if you need a new occasional CP card, giving €7.70. Reserved Intercidades tickets are a different product, with a standard second-class single listed at €13.55.
What time is the last train from Guimarães to Porto?
CP's currently linked urban timetable lists a daily 22:55 departure, arriving at Campanhã at 00:10 and São Bento at 00:15 the next day. Recheck the timetable and disruption notices for your date before relying on the last service.
Can I use Andante for the whole trip to Guimarães?
No. Andante coverage on this branch ends at Vila das Aves. Buy the appropriate CP ticket to Guimarães; eight CP fare zones do not mean an Andante Z8 ticket. Keep your reusable CP card for compatible later journeys.
Is there a long return-train gap at weekends?
Yes: the published weekend/public-holiday urban timetable has departures at 15:51 and 17:56, a 2-hour-5-minute gap. But long gaps are not exclusive to weekends: 13:51 and 15:51 are two hours apart every day. Save a suitable return and a backup before sightseeing.
Can I take a direct bus instead of the train?
Yes. FlixBus lists a direct Porto TIC Campanhã–Guimarães coach-terminal route; check your date's price and duration. From Porto Airport, GET BUS lists a separate direct coach from P8 to Guimarães Cais 8, with a scheduled 40-minute journey. The coach terminal and railway station are different places.
